About the Book

In terms of assessing investment opportunities in CARICOM agriculture this book is not only the most comprehensive but also the most current. It was published in August 2007, and it identifies a comprehensive range of projects (some 300) for implementation in the various CARICOM member states.

The outline of the book is easy to follow and the language is simple to comprehend.

The book begins with an over-view of the Caribbean region followed by that of the CARICOM region. It then goes on to describe, in political and economic terms, each CARICOM member state.

Chapter 2 outlines the process of integration and examined the movement from Federation to CARIFTA to CARICOM.

Chapter 3 reviews early settlement and the development of agriculture right up to the present time. This review is done over the following periods (1) During slavery 1800 - 1834 (2) Post emancipation period (3) Pre-independence period and (4) Post independence period.

An assessment of economic growth and development within the CARICOM region, particularly during the last decade is done in Chapter 4.

Chapter 5 outlines what is considered to be an appropriate strategy for development of the CARICOM region. An "Implementation and Coordinating " mechanism is also proposed.

Chapter 6 lists all the potential projects (some 300) identified for implementation. These can be considered "project ideas" and would have to be developed and appraised before becoming candidates for implementation. In Chapter 6 is also provided a "Step - by- Step" methodology to develop complete project profiles. A campaign for funding is also proposed which will facilitate implementationof the recommended projects.

About this book, it is important to point out that while the focus is on the CARICOM region, its recommendations, based on sound economic principles, have direct relevance any where in the third world.
